The European Union has been a global leader in sustainable development and climate change mitigation for decades. Key strategic documents, such as the Europe 2020 Strategy, the Strategy for the Circular Economy, the European Green Deal (EGD), and the Fit for 55 package, highlight the EU's commitment to environmentally-friendly policies. The Europe 2020 Strategy achieved a 20% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and over 20% renewable energy use by 2020. The EGD aims for Europe to become the first climate-neutral continent by 2050, with interim goals in the Fit for 55 package targeting a 55% reduction in emissions and 40% renewable energy by 2030. However, the Russian aggression against Ukraine has prompted the EU to address new challenges, including reducing dependence on Russian energy and enhancing military readiness. The RePowerEU strategy aims to eliminate reliance on Russian fossil fuels by 2030. Economic sanctions on Russia and significant economic and military support for Ukraine are part of this response. Despite these efforts, more international collaboration is necessary to ensure Europe remains on a sustainable development path. This paper examines the EU's sustainability ambitions, the geopolitical challenges, and the need for global cooperation for a sustainable future.
